Moth

It fascinates me to find such things as this moth on one of my magnolia trees, almost not seen at first, it so blends in with the texture and colors of the bark. I was touching the trunk with my left hand - yes, I am a tree-hugger, but I wasn’t really hugging this tree - just talking to it. This is when I came upon this little creature tucked so perfectly near the crack in the skin of this tree.
I couldn’t help but see this as something to consider with more ponderous thought. This moth is hard to see so that he will not become a meal. Most of his life is probably spent hiding, until it is time to find a mate... and even then, don’t they send out a scent or a vibration for this purpose? Obviously I am not a moth expert, so I will leave this one alone. I just wanted to share the photo of this illusive creature who is a perfect example of the wondrous ability Nature possesses to always amaze.

Far From Home

Clothed in a tattered long-sleeve shirt
stained in pungent wetness
deep chartreuse and cochineal red,
I bend over in endless repetition
grabbing the fibrous stalk
with rugged, numb hands
unearthing scarlet beets.
In pre-dawn hours
we harvest a foggy field
our burdened senses filled
with penetrating odors -
depleted soil
pesticide waste
and our own unfaltering dread.
Wretched weary in body
sundown approaches
signaling the close to
a migrant worker’s
arduous day
and a deep
insatiable hunger.
My belly full,
bottles of empty cervesa
roll under my cot,
and I try to see my wife’s copper face
her strong inherited features
her compassionate arms
reaching for
my despondent heart.
Unable to escape
consuming sleep
I am chased by
their beady, haunting eyes –
hulking Immigration Police
gripping at my neck
shaking my body
awake
for the next day.
