Cross on the side of the Road
Broken bits with strewn remains
on a crossroad
the soiled spot nearly worn away
by hot tires
and spring rains
dispersing small pieces
and the memory
over time.
It stands abrupt
close to the curb
weeds growing tall
surrounding it like a perfect halo
a gentle green wreath.
A weathered piece of paper
flaps like a single wing
stuck to the stark-white surface.
Perhaps a note
a message
from a distraught loved one...
Why did you leave us?
The endless stream of cars
moves fast
spewing whirlwinds
of empty cups, plastic bags
and dust.
Do they notice?
Do they care?
Someone traveled their last
moment
here
at this crossroad.
