Blood

Blood red–
flowing within the universal connection,
from the darkest part of ourselves,
spilled in greedy, angry wars
shocking, horrid moments
bleeding into ancient rivers
soaking the torn earth again and again.
A small child’s finger cut,
a young woman’s rite of passage,
the favorite drink of the undead,
sharp teeth sinking into their victim’s neck,
in some scary version of the latest vampire movie.
Sweet blood of birth,
our bodies washed in grace,
our faces full of painful wonder,
our hearts aching with hunger and fear,
the beating rhythm of hope
pushing throughout our tiny veins.
Love red -
the glow within a human spirit,
roses hanging on every moment,
overflowing in secretions,
faces blushing, engorged limbs
the heat of the night
veiled in deep lust.
Love sacred -
cherished beyond measure,
a priceless thing,
always at the highest cost,
familiar sacrifice
from fluid to dust
until we are placed once more
into the mother’s womb
of soft red light and blood.
