Rain in Houston

Strange moody energy hangs
As if somehow contained in a box.
Sweet smells drift in the distant air
As clouds form in heavy gray hues
Changing with subtle darkness
Hair flies suspended
And rare full skirts have their Marilyn Monroe moment
When women run in wobbly high heels
Men swiftly walk in rubber flip-flops
That really want to fall off
Heavy droplets fall sporadic
Splash dancing on hot, steaming pavement
Forming a perfect rhythm
Like a giant shower head turned on
Heavy water streams in sideways
Drifting across the already swollen streets
Cars seem to float
Moving as if they have a mind of their own
Some realize that they have gone too far
And begin to disappear halfway
Wet conversations speak of predictions…
“I heard that Shepard and Richmond are flooded…
But, it should clear up soon”
Heads turn to the window to stare out
While umbrellas drip on the floor and fall over
Everyone adjusts to the moisture
Like dogs that shake when they are too wet
We all wait for the chance to go home
